Today’s complex world means that we must also cooperate closely on new and emerging challenges. Our bilateral defense relationship now embraces strategic security communication, combatting terrorism, and enhanced cybersecurity cooperation
in defense of vital national interests.
Combatting malign influence and countering the propaganda efforts of those who wish
us harm is another significant area of cooperation.
On the economic front, the
transition and path of reform over the past 30 years has not been an easy one, but Romania has overcome challenges to emerge as a financially stable country.
The results of these efforts are evident in the economic growth and development over the past 30 years fueled by the influx of foreign investment from the EU and the United States.
Today, fully 76% of Romania’s exports
and imports are intra- EU community trade, linking Romania to the transatlantic economy – the world’s largest and most important market. The transatlantic economy generates $5.5 trillion in total
commercial sales per year, employing 15 million workers on both sides of the Atlantic. In Romania, U.S. companies and brands are present across every sector of the economy, employing Romanians, driving innovation, paying taxes, and providing consumers quality products – something unimaginable just 30 years ago.
We have seen extraordinary growth in our economic relationship. For example, in 1992, two-way trade was just $335 million; by 2007 it was $1.7 billion; and in 2017 that figure reached a record high of $3.15 billion.
