Hidroelectrica
will develop joint projects with Austria's largest energy producer
Hidroelectrica, the largest energy producer in Romania, concluded a memorandum of cooperation with Verbund Hydro Power GmbH, Austria’s leading producer and trader of electricity and one of Europe’s largest hydroelectric power producers.
The two companies thus expressed their willingness to jointly develop projects, to implement design, construction and equipment solutions based on the latest solutions and technologies in the energy field.
The document also provides for the transfer of information and know-how on how to regulate energy, the operation of non-personnel stations (through control centres), the optimisation of maintenance and repair activities, and the implementation of innovative solutions and technologies for the implementation of the European Union’s directives in the field of environmental protection, including ensuring the longitudinal connectivity of watercourses.
“The Memorandum of Cooperation certifies
the real interest of both companies in the development of high added-value projects. Virtually two very powerful companies decide today to pool know-how and work together
to identify and subsequently implement
viable development projects. We see in our cooperation with Verbund Hydro Power GmbH a real opportunity, from which both companies will
surely win”, said Bogdan Badea, President of the Hidroelectrica Directorate.
Verbund is the largest Austrian energy producer, with 51% of the shares held by the state. The company operates hydro power plants with an installed capacity of 7,700 MW. In Romania, Verbund has built and operates a 226 MW wind farm in Dobrogea.
Investment budget of over EUR 800 million until 2020
According to the Energy Strategy of Romania up to 2030, Hidroelectrica will have an investment budget of over EUR 800 million until 2020 for modernisation and refurbishment works at the plants currently in operation.
In addition, the investment that is necessary
for the completion by 2030 of the complex use hydro-energetic facilities, optimised according to the current requirements, amount to about EUR 2.5 billion. The amount will be provided
by Hidroelectrica and by other companies and authorities benefiting from such complex uses. In 2030, the total power installed in the hydroelectric power plants in Romania will reach 7,490 MW compared to 6,741 MW in 2018. Following this increase in installed capacity, the production of electricity in hydropower plants will increase from 16.55 TWh in 2018 to 17.60 TWh in 2030.
