the Army to the highest possible standards, the satellite telecommunication programme for the National Security System has become a priority.
Thus, the Minister of National Defence, Gabriel Leş, had a meeting with the President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Marius-Ioan Piso, and with a delegation of technical experts of the European Space Agency (ESA).
The ESA experts visited Romania in order to provide technical support to the Romanian Space Agency, an institution that participates
in the concept study to document the project regarding the satellite telecommunication system that will respond the needs of the National Security System of Romania, a programme that will be coordinated by MApN.
The development of a satellite telecommunication system is a strategic project of national interest with application in the field of satellite communications and advanced technology that will ensure the multi- domain coverage of the mission needs of the Ministry of National Defence and of other state institutions with responsibilities in the field of
national security.
Currently, Romania rents and uses annually from abroad an increasing number of satellite streams for the units deployed in areas of interest, for missions in the theatres of operations, participation
in national and international exercises and commitments, all these efforts involving very high financial costs, both for the Romanian Army and for state institutions with responsibilities in the field of national security, MApN.
The Satellite telecommunication programme has the following main objectives: the consolidation of Romania's role within NATO and the EU, decreased dependence on the providers of satellite services, the gradual development of a satellite system to ensure the fulfilment of the mission needs of the Ministry of National Defence and state institutions over times
of peace, crisis and war,
as well as ensuring the redundancy of terrestrial communications networks organised at the national level, which can be severely affected in exceptional situations, emergencies or calamities.
