RSV NUYINA, THE SHIP TURNING TODAY’S
Australia operates several research stations in Antarctica and Southern Ocean. These stations are being permanently equipped and resupplied by Aurora Australis, an icebreaker commissioned and still in service since 1990. Th
e ship operates from Hobart, the Australian Antarctic Division Headquarters.
Aurora shall be soon replaced by the 160-meter long Antarctic Supply and Research Vessel (ASRV) Nuyina, currently under construction at Damen Shipyards Galaţi. Outfitted with high-end technology, Nuyina (‘southern lights’ in the Tasmanian Aborigines language) shall play a critical role in cli- matic research by providing support to Asia-Pacific cryobiology activities, tracking the changes of the ocean currents and serving as a high latitude atmospheric research platform.
